Award-winning photographer Ulysses Aoki will be showing his solo exhibition, “Scenes Left Behind,” at Kitamura Camera’s Shinjuku flagship store. The Exhibition will feature a decade of vibrant, candid photographs documenting Tokyo’s transformation, including the city’s Olympic preparations, the pandemic and socioeconomic changes. Aoki’s snapshots of Tokyo are contrasted with photos from other cities like Rome, offering a global view of urban evolution.
Ulysses was the first solo exhibitor invited to Kitamura Camera's newly opened basement gallery. The exhibition was co-curated between the Kitamura Camera gallery team and Ulysses, while art direction was solely done by Ulysses with the help of FLATLABO in Tokyo for printing and framing. Over 1,000 people were estimated to have visited the exhibition over 2 weeks-- a record high for galleries run by Kitamura Camera.
A talk event during the opening reception and 2 workshops were conducted as side events. All events were paid admission and sold out.
A comment from Ulysses:
"This exhibition was my largest as of today, and the most thought out. Images were printed large with no mattes or acrylic or glass, enhancing the painterly quality and truly allowing the viewer to be endulged. It also opened up hints for future exhibitions, after understanding how my work can truly speak in a tangible format. Overall, I'm confident that the exhibition was a success both at a personal level, but also for the Kitamura camera shop as well, since traffic to the gallery and the store was at all-time highs during the exhibition period. Thank you to all the members and executives at Kitamura Holdings and Kitamura Shashinkiten that were involved."
